Subject: whats the purpose of oil on the lane?

why do they put oil on the lane? Im sure its to help the ball slide
along but ive seen lanes where the last portion right before the pins
had a lot more on it. why do they have light oil and heavy oil
conditions? does the bowling alley do this on purpose to make it harder
or easier or does it have to do with preservation and age of the wood
of the lanes?
