I was bowling the other night & saw several pocket 7 10 splits. I knew
they happened occasionally but they seem to be happening more & more
frequently.

Many and many reasons could cause this matter.... For me it should be linked
with a carry-down situation or maybe a too much direct shot. (not enough
angle or too much speed)

Sometimes it is something to do with the shot. My brother left 2 in a
single game yesterday after not seeing one in 4 years.

I left that 3 in a row about 5 years ago to begin the day. : ( All of
them were solid pocket 7-10. That kind of ruined my series somewhat
although I did ended up with 199 that game.

I believe this was recently covered in "Bowling This Month". As I seen
to recall, the author gave a good dissertation about ** modern
equipment ** (read: "advanced" coverstocks) being the "root cause" of
increased "split-itis", specifically in the area of "too much hook
(friction) with too much speed (bowler trying to overcome friction)
causing too much 'pin action', resulting in lots of 'splitty frames'",
or something like that. I think the article was in the one of the last
3 issues (Sept., Oct., or . 2006).

My personal opinion is that there are pins off spot. A few will pop up from
time to time, but when there are several on the same lane I get suspicious.
At one time we had a lane that left the 5-7-10 on a pocket hit. There would
be several a night for weeks. Finally they moved the pin deck forward (or
something like that) and it stopped.
