Subject: When you have a night so bad, sandbagging seems like the only viable option...

So, I'm bowling in my competetive friday night 3-man handicap league and our leadoff man is absent. We couldn't find a sub for him so we use his blind (172). I bowl ok the first game, 219....we take 6 points the first game (21 point system). All seems well then the bottom falls out....my thumb swells and I can't for the life of me fit into any of my balls....all the tape is out of them, I use ez-slide...nothing helps...I bowl a 150 the second game, our middle man can't carry and leaves nothing but 10 pins....we lose 6 points. The last game I am so desperate I use my other teammates ball whose thumb hole is way big...so I stick some tape in there, get a strike or two....but the rest are 10 pin taps or worse and my spare ball sticks on me so I can't make any. The other teams' 158 average bowler starts stringing strikes and then they all start striking and the writing is on the wall by the 6th or 7th frame....all I felt I could do was sandbag, I mean, why bother trying at this point...the 158 avg guys ends up with 5 in a row and a 201...I miss 3 or 4 spares, end up with a 139...we lose 13 points out of 21 total. Now it doesn't seem so bad, I mean, I somehow managed to shoot 508 and we took 8 points with a blind....but I never felt like such a piece of crap in my life feeling so powerless that sandbagging was the only viable option. My 201 avg dropped to 195...so I will get 5 more pins in handicap next week but...Am I making too much of this or did some of you out there feel the same way in a similar situation? I hope I never feel that way again. GH
