Are there any Pros that insert their thumb into the ball before the
fingers? I have only seen this done a couple of times and it is
supposed to be a very effective way to combat dry lanes. Any ideas? I
also understand that in order to be effective, the thumb must be VERY
snug.

Its always best to find out on your own then to be told..Go to your
lanes and try it..Bowl your normal way and then after awhile start to
bowl putting your thumb in 1st and you will have your answers..

There's nothing wrong with experimenting during practice. But a qualified
coach knows cause and effect as well as techniques that work. They can help
you know what will work best for you. The "fling and hope" method is not as
successful as a few good tips. You can get DVDs, tapes and books that help
improve your game. But a coach can cut through all the guesswork and address
your specific need.
If there are no certified coaches the guy in the pro shop, or the
manager, or the youth coach, or a high average bowler etc. can help.
If you prefer to coach yourself, that's okay. But the progress may be
slow.

Interesting query.

Thumb first is typically taught as a way to decrease revs on the ball.
When you insert thumb first you slightly alter the wrist position and
you don't get the fingers as far into the grips. So yes, pros do it
but it's not very common and/or is used for specific purpose.

Tommy Jones does a different thing where he "screws" or sets his thumb
into the ball. You wouldn't teach it persee but it works for him. Wes
Mallott does another weird thing where he puts his thumb in, then out,
then back in while in his approach. Again, doesn't seem to hurt his
game any.

All of this proves that the most common way to do things isn't the
only way to do it. Just look at my armswing... That said, there is a
simple common form that most players will do well to emulate.

Tommy Jones is the only one that I know of.
