Subject: There is a certain "bullshit" factor to the supposed challenge of sport bowling leagues
|
The third week into our sport bowling league and there is a peculiar fact that is surfacing. Some mediocre players on the typical house conditions are actually bowling better than people that are good bowlers on house conditions. What does this prove? I think that some people with a naturally weaker/straighter release are benefitting just because the difficult pattern doesn't magnify their mistakes as much because they put soo little axis rotation on the ball and cover soo few boards. For instance, my friend who bowled only once or twice a week during the winter and never cracked a 190 average this season is now averaging 12 pins higher than me in the sport league. This guy does not practice, averages 170-80 something this year in 2 winter leagues yet he suddenly is king of the sport shot just because he rolls the ball with virtually no side rotation and can generally keep his ball around the head pin whether he makes a mistake or not. How is this supposed to prove who is the better bowler when almost half of his strikes on the sport shot are crossover mistakes? I think it is bullshit because the high average guy in our sport league with a 170-something is a mediocre player on the THS and can barely average around 200. If these guys are superior bowlers then shouldn't they be able to beat our asses on the THS too if it is soo easy compared to the sport shot? I am not sure what this sport shot is proving other than that it naturally favors certain people who roll the ball with less side rotation. The best house bowler here who can average in the 240's is barely maintaining a 150 average and he can put sick revs and power on the ball and he is not horrible at accuracy either, so you tell me what BS is at work here. It doesn't mean that these people are necessarily better bowlers because I know for a fact that someone like my friend does not practice, did not practice on a sport shot, yet he can do better than me on it instantly while I bowl at least 5-6 times a week and practice all the time and averaged at least 20-30 pins better than him in both leagues I bowled with him in the winter. I know a sport shot is supposed to be about challenge and rising to the occasion but I smell some serious bullshit and I know it is not all in my head.... Chuck B
