Subject: The thumb keeps swelling up!

Hi,
Have been playing hook for a while. My release has not been the most
perfect of hook releases recently, but today I when I wanted to play,
my thumb kept getting stuck at the release! We scraped the thumbhole to
allow for more space, but to not much use as the thumb kept getting
stuck. The thumb is quite larger compared to my other thumb of course,
a sort of corn has developed on the inside of the thumb joint - that's
always been there but for some reason this seemed larger today.
One theory is that perhaps the temperature being hot today this could
happen, but am worried whether this is fixable. The last time this
happened on a pronounced scale last year I had to buy new balls.
I would like to know what causes the thumb to swell during bowling.
Also any tips on how to care for the thumb so it comes down to a better
size sooner than later?
