Subject: Questions from a long absent bowler

I am returning to bowling after being absent from the game since
1992-93. After a couple weeks of practice, I have decided to join a
league and get back into action. (I think my bowling balls gained weight
during the layoff, because they seem to be much heavier these days....)
For now, I only want to bowl in one, maybe two leagues. ( I was bowling
in 4 leagues years ago.) What my question comes down to is, what is the
difference between a sanctioned and a non-sanctioned league? Also, is
there a down-side to joining a non-sanctioned league?
Any light that any of you can shed on these questions? Thanks for any
help you can give.
