Subject: Being a good team player...

Hello all, Something happened in league last night that made me want to start a thread about what it means to be a good team player. I bowl in a scratch league on Wednesday nights and we have a decent team that is contending for one of the top spots. It is a fairly competetive league and although we can be dominating when we are on, we have our hands full most nights. I have been getting along with all the people on the team fine but for about the past two months or so the anchor guy is really starting to annoy me. The problem is, this guy is a younger guy who is a little immature and he carries this chip on his shoulder about bowling that makes him soo competetive that he even competes with his own teammates, mostly me. Normally I would say a little friendly competition is fine, even amongst teammates, but this guy has been chasing me all year in average and has been letting me know about it every week he has been closing the gap and now that he has eclipsed me. My take is, we get enough competition and pressure from our opponents, I don't need any more needling from a teammate about who is performing better than who every week. This guy supposedly comes from a well known family in the area that has members in the local bowling hall of fame going back generations, blah blah blah and I guess he had it in his mind that he wouldn't feel satisfied with himself until he beat me in average and proved his pedigree. I'm hoping now that he has accomplished his goal he will shut up about it and just bowl but after bowling with this guy the whole year it seems to me that bowling to someone like him has a lot more to do with his ego and less about the team. You can kind of tell because some guys, even when the team is doing well in the game, always act moody and complain when they are not doing well themselves. I hear this guy talk to himself when he is having an off game, calculating his max score possibility after every frame and whining about it when it doesn't meet his criteria for a good game. The guy is a good bowler and it has been beneficial for us to have him on the team but enough is enough already. I am considering not coming back to the team next year just because I can't stand this guys attitude. My current mindset is that if my enjoyment of the game is reduced by the way someone on my team is, then it is not worth it to bowl with them no matter how good they are, or am I just being silly?
